The Joe Shung Archive is an ongoing project by Justin Suazo, his grandson, to digitize the photographs and film footage captured between 1935 to 1975 that Joe left behind. Joe Shung was an airplane mechanic by trade, but an avid photographer and filmmaker at heart. He emigrated from China to the United States in 1929 and grew up to adopt the American Way: Kodak, Cowboys, and Coca-Cola. Joe left behind an incredible archive that tells the story of a young Chinese immigrant pioneering a new identity and defining what it means to be American. This project is dedicated to Shirley Shung, Joe’s Daughter, a lover of the arts, photography, and saving every last rubber-band and twist tie.
